Huddersfield overpowered a stubborn Hull FC to claim an 11th win in 12 games and close the gap on Super League’s top four.
The game was finely poised at the end of a scoreless first half, but Alex Mellor and Lee Gaskell tries after the break set the Giants up for the win.
A fine individual try from Bureta Faraimo gave Hull hope of avoiding a sixth straight defeat.
However, Ryan Hinchcliffe and Ukuma Ta’ai tries gave the Giants victory.
Huddersfield’s sixth successive win moved them to within four points of the semi-final spots, with Warrington fourth after going down to third-placed Castleford on Friday.
Catalans Dragons will move above Hull and into seventh in the table if they overcome high-flying Wigan in Perpignan on Saturday.
At a rain-soaked John Smith’s Stadium, the in-form Giants and out-of-sorts Airlie Birds showed plenty of attacking endeavour in the first 40 minutes, but a combination of greasy conditions and stubborn defending at both ends ensured the half finished pointless.
Hull invited pressure on themselves immediately after the break with handling errors gifting the Giants field position and the first points, with Danny Brough putting Mellor through a gap for the opening try on 43 minutes.
Gaskell grabbed a second soon after, with Brough adding the extras before extending the lead to 14-0 with a penalty.
While tries to start and finish the half hurt Hull FC, any hopes of a late-season recovery suffered a bigger blow when influential back rower Mark Minichiello, who opted to play despite struggling with a hernia, was forced off, while Chris Green was helped off the field with a leg injury.
