| Rassie: Jantjies was 'brilliant' at times

Cape Town – Coach Rassie Erasmus believes that flyhalf Elton Jantjies showed glimpses of what he can offer in the No 10 jersey in Saturday’s 23-18 loss to Australia in Brisbane.

Jantjies enjoyed a largely impressive first-half, but the combined effort of the Boks in the second half meant that nobody left covered in glory.

The Lions pivot was eventually replaced by Handre Pollard in the 64th minute, leaving the field having given a performance that had promised much, but ultimately delivered little.

There was a moment, just before Jantjies came off, that summed it all up.

With the Boks on the attack and swinging the ball to the right, Jantjies opted for a cheeky stab through the defensive line from about five metres out.

It looked like it might come off, but the ball rolled out into touch-in-goal before Cheslin Kolbe could get there.

“I thought Elton did brilliant things at times. He kicked really well at poles,” Erasmus explained after the match.

“That little grubber into the in-goal area could have been a try if it was a little bit shorter, but when it doesn’t come off it’s a terrible mistake.”

Jantjies is expected to be given the No 10 jersey again for Saturday’s clash against the All Blacks in Wellington.
