Cape Town – The Mzansi Super League got off a blistering start as the Cape Town Blitz defeated the Tshwane Spartans in the opening match at Newlands on Friday evening.
Ferisco Adams took the key wickets of Spartans skipper AB de Villiers and Rilee Rossouw as the Cape Town franchise won by 49 runs.
De Villiers, who was welcomed back eagerly by the Newlands faithful, smashed 59 off 30 balls before he was caught by the boundary off the bowling of Adams.
Adams then cleanly bowled Rossouw (15), who played his first game in South Africa since signing a Kolpak deal with Hampshire last year.
Wickets continued to fall for the Pretoria franchise, as they were bundled out for 131 in 19.3 overs.
Adams produced match-winning figures of 3/28 in front of the 6953 Newlands crowd.
Earlier in the evening, De Villiers won the toss and chose to field first as Kyle Verreynne and Mohammad Namaz starred with the bat.
The duo went on to share a 100-run fourth wicket partnership.
Pakistan’s Namaz smashed his highest T20 score as he made 59 off 37 balls before falling to Andrew Birch.
Wicket-keeper batsman Verreynne hit 6 fours and a six to finish the Blitz’ innings with an unbeaten 53 off 34.
Birch was the pick of the Spartans bowlers as he produced figures of two for 39.
