| Andy Murray slays the Instagram game

Cape Town – A persistent hip injury may have seen Andy Murray slip to 240th in the ATP Tour rankings, but the British three-time Grand Slam winner is without question ranked No 1 in the social media stakes.

Murray, who was sidelined for 11 months after Wimbledon in 2017 in an attempt to recover from the injury, has taken a hilarious swipe at himself ahead of next week’s Australian Open.

The 31-year-old Scotland-born Murray posed alongside the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup on Sunday, which will be awarded to the male champion in Melbourne.

While Murray has never hoisted the trophy, he has made it to the final five times, losing out to Novak Djokovic on four occasions (2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016) and Roger Federer once (2010).

Murray captioned the Instagram post with, “The closest I’ll ever get to the Aussie open trophy,”, alongside the hashtag #5timeloser.

Murray, whose official title is Sir Andrew Barron Murray OBE, also uploaded a New Year’s image of him “celebrating the end of 2018” while drinking champagne out the bottle and calling the last 12 months “shit”.

Continuing is his self-deprecating manner, Murray last month posted an image of him snuggling up to an array of Disney toy characters, with the caption: “I have no real friends”.

The 2019 Australian Open starts on Monday, January 14.
