Manchester United news: Manager Jose Mourinho needs his first team players and hopes World Cup stars cut short their holidays to help

United needs you

The likes of Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Marouane Fellaini are on well deserved breaks, but Marcus Rashford and Phil Jones have already returned

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho wants his absent World Cup players to cut short their holidays and help the team out.

So far the club have had an underwhelming pre-season tour of America where they have won once, on penalties against Milan, drawn twice and lost to Premier League rivals Liverpool.

Players like Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku have been given time off to recover after their involvement at the World Cup, though England duo Marcus Rashford and Phil Jones have already come home.

“I hope that the boys on deserved holidays take care of themselves a bit and that somebody wants to do what Rashford and Phil Jones decided to do, which is to be back a bit earlier to try to help the team because for the beginning of the season we are going to be in trouble,” Mourinho said.

The manager has a number of players injured, including Nemanja Matic and Antonio Valencia and has been playing a mixture of first team players, reserves and U23 players.

Mourinho also revealed he is keen to add two more players to his squad, but doubts he will be able to.

So far, the club have signed Diogo Dalot from Porto, Lee Grant from Stoke and Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.

“I would like to have two more players,” Mourinho said after his side’s 4-1 defeat to Liverpool.

“I think I am not going to have two. I think it’s possible I am going to have one. It’s possible.

“I gave a list to the club of five names a few months ago and I wait to see if it is possible to have one of these players.

“If it is possible it is possible, if it is not possible it is not possible. If it is possible, good, if it is not possible we keep fighting, working and believing in the players that we have.”
