After a controversial draw last year, the two middleweight kings will duke it out for supremacy later this year, Oscar De La Hoya has confirmed
Gennady Golovkin and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will finally meet in a highly-anticipated rematch later this year.
After months of speculation and waiting, Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya confirmed the fight would be taking place this September.
He said on Twitter: “I am happy to inform we have a fight September 15!!”
There were fears the rematch would never take place after months of speculation.
Golden Boy, the promotional company representing Alvarez, warned the Ukrainian he had a deadline to accept their renewed proposal.
Triple G was offered a 42.5% split of the purse for the two middleweight warriors to duke it out to see who is king of the division.
Only the WBA Super belt will be on the line when the duo meet after Canelo was stripped of his Ring magazine title for failing a drugs test.
The Mexican was found to have traces of the banned substance Clenbuterol in his system back in February.
Two further tests showed him to be clean.
The first match ended in controversial circumstances, with Golovkin appearing to win the first fight back in September.
However, a draw was determined to be the outcome – leaving neither man satisfied and keen to claim their revenge.
