England fans blast decision to make Fabian Delph captain: ‘Is this game just for banter?’

'lost for words'

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate confirmed the Manchester City man will wear the armband and supporters on Twitter were not impressed

Fabian Delph’s first experience as England captain will undoubtedly be a strange one.

First of all, there is the small matter of record-goalscorer Wayne Rooney coming on to take the armband from him at some point.

Secondly, it’s questionable whether Delph would even start the game unless it were an inconsequential friendly against the USA.

The Manchester City man has made just three Premier League appearances for his club this season, but nevertheless he will captain his country on Thursday night.

Gareth Southgate said: “Fabian is captaining his country for the first time and it is brilliant reward for him. He is an outstanding player and outstanding person.

“He is a huge leader within our group and I have really enjoyed working with him. You don’t give the England captaincy to someone unless you really think they can carry it and he has those outstanding attributes.”

England fans on Twitter, however, weren’t so thrilled.
