It appears we may finally get to see this domestic showdown next year
Amir Khan has revealed that negotiations have now begun for a fight between him and fellow Brit Kell Brook in 2019.
The 31-year-old previously made clear that his first choice opponent was Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao, however with ‘Pac Man’ likely heading in another direction, attention has now turned to a bout with Brook.
“Obviously me and Brook are with Eddie Hearn,” Khan told Sky.
“I’ve left that to Eddie to do all the negotiations, to speak to both parties, to speak to his trainer, his manager, himself.
“But look, it’s a fight I’d love to have, and I think it would make a lot of money financially for both fighters, but at the same time it would be a massive fight in the UK. It’s a fight that the fans want. Why not make it happen?”
Khan also explained one of the stipulations in the contract, which is that after making the welterweight limit of 147lbs, neither man will be able to rehydrate above 157lbs within the following 24 hours.
“Nothing can stop it,” Khan continued, “He’s agreed to be 147, and also have a rehydration clause of 10 pounds. I’m happy with that.
“If he’s happy to take that, so am I. That fight can happen then 147 it is, and we’re with the same promotional team, so that makes the fight even easier. Let’s see what happens.”
Kell Brook posted the following Tweet after his rival revealed the rehydration clause.
Despite the fact his return was originally targeted for December, Amir Khan has now stated this fight would take place a bit later than that.
The back end of 2018 has seen a clustered schedule emerge, so the British pair would wait until the early stages of next year for their fight.
“This year, I think will be difficult,” added Khan. “It will be probably next year, because we are coming towards the end and obviously we would want to promote that fight to be a mega fight.
“We want to make it the biggest fight probably in Britain for a long time. The way we do that is by promoting it the right way, and having a good training camp, so that way, there are no excuses.”
